The rumors are true: Jackie O’s Taproom is going solar!

Continuing our commitment to sustainability, Jackie O’s is proud to announce that we are the recipients of a federal grant that will help our Taproom & production brewery run on roof-mounted solar energy panels.

Applying to receive a grant through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Energy for America Program is a complicated process, one that was masterfully spearheaded by our own Michelle Corrigan Oestrike. This USDA program, designed to help rural and agricultural businesses like ours save, replace, or generate energy, has afforded Jackie O’s $44,119 to help bring solar energy to 25 Campbell Street. The grant offsets the $176,500 total cost of a project aimed to install 298 solar panels on to the roof of our offsite brewery.

Sustainability means giving back all we take, but that is impossible in 2015. Jackie O’s is not yet entirely sustainable, but we strive to be. After listening to Patrick Conway, one of the founders of Great Lakes Brewing Company, Art felt like our brewery should continue working in more sustainable directions. Solar energy is just one of several company-wide improvements being made to reach our goals and we promise continue to pursue more sustainable solutions for everything we do. This grant is a great step forward in achieving just that.

Working with our friends at local solar power vender Third Sun Solar, the new panels will generate more than 100,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually – roughly the amount used by 10 households! We are excited about this in the biggest of ways. The energy generated from these panels will be approximately 72% of our current usage and will amount to about 40% of the Taproom & production brewery’s total usage in a few years, once our full expansion is complete. Once we finish installing the panels (which boast 9.387 kilowatts each), the USDA will reimburse Jackie O’s for around 35% of the cost of the project.

Support has been pouring in from friends and strangers around the world. We appreciate the love and the great media coverage, too! Going solar means big things for Jackie O’s and we are excited to break the big news during Ohio Brew Week. Come celebrate at the Taproom, Public House and Brewpub – we’re open all week!
